How can I tell if my child’s shoes fit properly, and when should I worry if something seems off?(opens in a new tab)

This month's #AskThePodseries features Dr. Michael Owens.(opens in a new tab)
With the new school year underway, it is important to make sure your child's shoes are properly fitted. A good fit supports comfort, posture, and healthy development.
When find shoes for your kids, remember the following tips:
  • Start by checking that there is about a thumb's width of space between the longest toe and the front of the shoe.
  • The heel should fit snugly without slipping, and the arch and sole should feel stable, not flimsy.
  • Avoid shoes that twist too easily or fold in half, since those may not provide enough support.
Even when shoes are sized correctly, they can highlight deeper issues. If your child begins to limp, trip often, walk differently, or complain of foot pain after activity, it could point to an underlying foot condition. These symptoms should not be ignored.
At NIFAS(opens in a new tab), we specialize in pediatric foot and ankle care and can help identify concerns before they become bigger problems. If something feels off, we are here to provide answers and support your child's health from the ground up.

As school sports resume, student athletes are at higher risk for common foot and ankle injuries. Sports like football, soccer, and cross-country involve heavy impact and repetitive movement that can lead to sprains, stress injuries, and heel pain.
To reduce risk, make sure your child wears shoes designed for their sport that fit well and are supportive of their foot. Encourage stretching routines that include the feet and ankles. If your child is limping, complaining of pain, or showing signs of swelling, bring them in for a quick evaluation(opens in a new tab). Prevention and early care make all the difference.

Balance, strength, and foot comfort all play a role in preventing falls as we age. Foot pain, reduced flexibility, and even small changes in walking patterns can increase fall risk. Fortunately, these issues can be addressed with simple steps and early care.
NIFAS providers(opens in a new tab)regularly work with older adults to improve gait, recommend proper footwear, and assess balance. If you’ve noticed changes in your mobility or feel less confident when walking, it’s a good time toschedule an evaluation(opens in a new tab). Taking care of your feet is one of the most important ways to protect your independence.
