It’s that time of the year when the sun is finally shining strong in Illinois. Most people will remember to put sunscreen on their face, shoulders, arms, and maybe a little on their legs, but what about the ankles and feet? These are often overlooked areas that are vulnerable to sunburn and also to skin cancer. The lower extremities are common sites where melanomas can arise.
We want this to be your reminder to protect your skin below the knees down to your toes and to perform regular skin checks for early detection of any concerning spots.
Don’t Overlook the Feet and Ankles
Skin cancer doesn’t just develop in areas that get a lot of sun. It can appear on the soles of the feet, between the toes, or even under toenails: places most people never think to check. Melanoma, squamous cell carcinoma, and basal cell carcinoma can all affect the lower extremities. Unfortunately, because these areas are often ignored, diagnosis is frequently delayed.
This is why it’s so important to include your feet and ankles in your sun protection routine.
Why See a Podiatrist?
As specialists in foot and ankle health, podiatrists are uniquely qualified to evaluate and diagnose skin conditions affecting the lower extremities. Whether it’s a new mole, an unusual-looking lesion, a non-healing wound, thickened skin, or a discolored toenail, we can assess whether it’s benign or requires further investigation.
I've identified various skin cancers on the lower legs and feet in patients who didn’t realize a concerning lesion was present. A simple in-office biopsy with local anesthesia can be a quick way to rule out an underlying skin disease and can give you peace of mind.
Early diagnosis is key. Catching skin cancer or other dermatologic conditions early leads to better outcomes and simpler treatments.
Know the ABCDEs of Skin Lesions
Be proactive with self-checks. When examining spots on your skin, remember the ABCDE rule for signs of melanoma:
If you notice any of these warning signs on your legs or feet, it’s time to see a podiatrist.
